Skiing adventure for North Wales pupils

May 09 2018

Following its the success of a 2017 trip with 6 pupils taking part in the first Anglesey Junior Schools Alpine Ski Course, this March we had 11 pupils make their weeks residential visit to Torgon, Switzerland with The Ski Company, supported by the Local Authority’s Outdoor Development Officer, Ceri Jones, and Anglesey Adventure Club Leader and Alpine Ski Course Leader, Jamie Holding.

The Alpine Ski Course is open to all Anglesey Junior Schools Years 5 and 6.

In preparation for the trip the group attended weekly lessons at Llandudno Ski Centre, as well as a visit to the Chill Factore for a 2hr lesson.

Ysgol Cybi, Holyhead, supported by the Head Teach, Mr Roberts, Assistant Head Miss Grieves, the school governors, and parents, saw 8 pupils spend a week at the Goldtest Centre, overlooking the Rhone Valley, on the edge of the Ported du Soleil network, the biggest interlinked international ski area in the world. The group were accompanied by one pupil from Caergeiliog and two pupils from Ysgol San Siôr, Llandudno, made them a group of 11.

Whilst the ski course is based around skiing, with 30 hours over the week at ski school, the learning objectives for the young people are much greater.

During their stay the group were visited by Wales’s number 1 Giant Slalom and Slalom skier, Zac Pierce. Zac has raced for Great Britain and took time out from his training to say hello to the group.

One parent said “I was very nervous as a parent it was my daughters 1st big holiday without us, I needn’t of worried my daughter was well looked after and had a trip she will never forget, she has returned more confident and can’t wait to go again.”

Another parent also said ‘The health benefits are well documented, but the children also benefitted in other ways from their trip. There has been a marked change in our sons self confidence and self-esteem since returning, and he is much more resilient in facing challenges than he may have been previously’

Ceri Jones, Anglesey Outdoor Activities Development officer explained “This is the second year that Anglesey Junior Schools have been invited to take part in the Junior Schools Alpine Ski Course. It was great to see the children learn new skills and make the most of the opportunities available to them, both on and off the slopes. I am hoping that more Anglesey schools will be involved in the 2019 Course with more Anglesey children taking part and benefitting from the experience.”
