Volunteer Cycling to new heights

February 05 2020

Local volunteer Sarah Hattle of Coed y Brenin Dragons, who recently completed the British Cycling Level 2 Coach training course, with thanks to our coach education programme, has launched cycling sessions aimed at young riders to learn basic bike skills and to build their confidence.

Mini Dragons came after having attended the initial training at the start of September, and Sarah wanted to make best use of her skills.

Sarah said ‘I decided the best use of my skills in the club was to launch “Mini Dragons” sessions. The idea being they develop enough to “graduate” into the main club mountain bike sessions. I started out with the hope of getting some more children confident about cycling and was also hoping the sessions might grow some children into the club to help with our dwindling numbers. In September I could never have anticipated how much demand there is for coaching.

Sarah enjoys coaching and four of the Mini Dragon riders have now graduated into the main sessions. The sessions have proved popular on social media, reaching a large audience, the biggest post was the “graduation” post which reached 4157 people.

Sarah adds ‘I am receiving messages from people in the Midlands asking if there is anything in their area!’

‘Throughout 2019 attendance at the coaching was dropping off. The first club coaching session for 2020 was a couple of weeks ago and ALL the sessions were fully booked to the point where we introduced an advanced group - previously we only had beginners and intermediate’

‘We found an extra leader so we could double the numbers in the intermediate session but there were still people who we had to turn away’

The sessions are proving popular and growing further- last year, the club’s New Year family ride saw two families attend. This year we had over 70 riders!

Sarah explains ‘I have so many ideas of where to take the club next and it is a really exciting time for us. I just wanted to thank you Outdoor Partnership for the support for the coaching course and also for introducing Rosie Davies to the club. She has ridden with us a couple of times now and is brilliant.
