Conwy Connect Climbing Club was set up in October 2016 for adults with learning disabilities. They meet weekly at the fantastic indoor climbing facility at Ysgol Y Gogarth, Llandudno. During the summer months they also meet and climb at local crags putting the skills learnt indoors into practice outdoors.
Under the guidance of lead instructor Gerwyn Lloyd, the participants, focus on learning and developing climbing skills and the associated rope work and belaying techniques. It is also a great opportunity to participate in a physical activity that contributes to strength, fitness and co-ordination. Since the club started, Gerwyn has been assisted by his partner Jacki who volunteers her time to help oversee and run the sessions.
Non Lederle who set up the club said “Jacki has selflessly given her time to assist Gerwyn with the climbing since the club started. The members who attend really value her input and will often request her assistance over the instructor! Jackie is patient, kind and knowledgeable and Conwy Connect are very lucky to have her on board.”
There is also a strong safety ethic in the club which involves participants constantly looking after and checking each other’s actions and developing teamwork. At the same time there is a real fun atmosphere at club sessions with members encouraging and helping each other whilst sharing a laugh and a joke. Further members are welcome and anyone interested in joining should contact Non at Non@conwy-connect.org.uk or call 01492 536486.
